What
is a domain?
A
domain name provides an Internet address for a group or organization. For example,
Activecom.com is the domain name for all accounts here at Active. Any
Active Subscriber can apply for their own domain name.
Can
I have a .org or .edu domain, or am I limited to .com?
The
most up-to-date information on Internic's regulations can be found at:
http://www.networksolutions.com/help/.
Fee
Schedule
At
this time, Active does not charges a one-time fee to register a new domain
or transfer an existing domain to Active. A Site hosting fee is also to cover
the administrative costs and manpower associated with setting up the Web Hosting
Account .
In
addition, the InterNIC (the central domain
registration agency) has separate fees that must be paid for domain registration.
The fees for domains are $70 upfront to cover the first two years' payment,
then $35 per year after. These fees are mandated by the government, and the
InterNIC is in no way affiliated with Active, nor do we receive any portion
of the fees paid directly to the InterNIC.
Users
will be billed separately by the InterNIC, and are responsible for making their
registration and renewal payments.
More
information can be found at their Registration Services Info page,
and also at their registration and
renewal fees fact sheet.
What
will a domain name do for me?
- A
domain name gives your business or group its own identity on the Internet.
- All
mail sent to a domain name will be routed to your account.
- You
will have a web address of http://www.yourdomain.com/ {web files
to appear under this URL must be placed in the html directory of
the Active account you register the domain under}
- All
ftp and gopher inquiries to a domain name associated to a Active account
will access our servers. .
What
do I need for a domain name?
Domain
name requests must be registered with InterNIC (Network Information Center).
This process generally takes anywhere from 2 working days to 6 weeks.
How
would I get my mail?
There
are three ways to deal with email sent to a domain name:
- Set
up the procmail mail distribution program in the .procmailrc file to distribute
mail to separate folders of one account or other Internet accounts.
- Forward
mail to other Internet accounts.
- Obtain
email sub-accounts.
Can
I move my domain from another provider?
It
is possible to switch a domain name to us from another provider. The process
of switching takes about two weeks, and requires some coordination between the
previous provider and us. Use the domain request form and indicate that you're
switching from a different provider.
Is
the domain name I want taken?
The
Unix command whois domain name looks up the IP address of a
domain name listed with the NIC. It's a good way to check and see if a domain
name has been taken already. We strongly urge you to check this out before you
apply for a domain name.
