Configuring Free PPP

From the menu bar click the Free PPP icon, and choose "Open Free PPP setup."

The following window will appear:

Is the Connect Button Grayed out? Check out this FAQ on how to fix it!

Click "Modem Setup...":

Make sure "Connected to" is set to "Modem Port" (PowerBook users set it to "Internal Modem) dial type is "tone," and "Modem speaker while connecting" and "Hang up on disconnect" are checked. If you have the correct init string for your modem, check "Use" and then fill in the string; otherwise, check "AutoDetect init string." Click ok.

This will put you back in the general window. In the lower right, click "Open TCP/IP. . ." (or Open Mac TCP if you have Mac TCP installed).

Click the Accounts tab:

Click "Edit" (or New of there isn't an untitled):

"Server name" is "Nothing But Net," in "Phone number" enter your local access number, "Connect" is set to "Directly," and in "User name" enter your login name. In the password field, enter your password. Make sure both your username and password are entered in lower case with no extra spaces.

Click the "Connection" tab:

Port speed will vary according to your modem speed. The following are basic recommendations

2400 modem, set port speed to 2400
9600 modem, set port speed to 9600
14.4 modem, set port speed to 38,400
28.8 and 33.6 modems, and 56k modems set port speed to 57, 600 (115k if using OS 7.5 or higher on a Power PC)

Set flow control to "CTS & RTS (DTR)." Click "ok," then click the general tab.

There will be one noticeable change. "Connect to" will now say Nothing But Net.

It's usually a good idea to close all windows and restart your computer at this point.
